So, you have a Windows 7 or 8/8.1 computer and a nice little notice from Microsoft comes up and says you can upgrade to Windows 10 for free. Sounds like a great deal right? Well, don’t get too click-happy just yet, even if it is free (for now anyway)!
Though Windows 10 seems to be a major improvement over the not-so-good Windows 8/8.1, it is still very new. And I’ve always lived by a very good rule-of-thumb as I will call it: Don’t ever jump to some new product from Microsoft (especially something as important as an operating system!) until it’s been out for at least 6 months to 1 year. That way, you give both Microsoft and the community to help work out most of the nasty bugs and let manufacturers create working drivers for the hardware in your computer.
Now, I’m not saying that you shouldn’t update at all. I’ve seen some successful upgrades from Windows 7 to Windows 10 with no data lost, but so far, I’ve seen more problems during the upgrade (or afterwards) for it to be too much of a hassle. You will not benefit from upgrading or gain anything really useful (unless you have a top-of-the-line gaming computer with the latest hardware and peripherals). We’ve already had some laptops come into the shop where the upgrade messed everything up and we’ve had to either, hopefully, fix it easy enough, or do a full backup and start from scratch with Windows 7 (or 8 if we must).
So let this be a warning that though something is new and shiny and potentially free, it doesn’t mean that you should jump on the new bandwagon. I know that Microsoft is really touting this as the greatest of all awesome things, but there’s not need to be hasty. Software, a digital item, is a completely different beast than a physical object and as thus requires care. Know when and when not to click or install.
OK that’s all for now. We do truly hope that Windows 10 will be great. It is in the right order for it to be, as Microsoft tends to create good OSes every other time, so we’ll see. (Win 98 was good, ME was BAD, 2000/XP was great, Vista was BAD, 7 is great, 8/8.1 is BAD, etc.)
