Like me, you as well as many others are annoyed by the little Windows 10 upgrade notification that gets installed onto your computer. It pops up every day (sometimes multiple times per day) and just gets in the way, especially when you don’t want to upgrade to 10 yet (or at all). Microsoft is sneaky and installs it automatically through your automatic Windows Updates (usually as an ‘important’ update). Thankfully, there is a way to get rid of the notification for good, or at least until the time where you actually want to upgrade.
Here’s how to remove Windows 10 notification (sorry to those running Windows 8, these instructions are based on Windows 7, but it should be pretty similar):
0). Please note that you will have to restart your computer for this to work, so please save anything you have open before continuing!
1.) Go into ‘Uninstall a Program’ or ‘Programs and Features’ in your Control Panel. It should eventually populate a list of all installed programs.
2.) Click on the ‘View Installed Updates’ link near the top-left, under ‘Control Panel Home’. This should eventually populate a list of all installed updates.
3.) There will be different sections here for the different Microsoft products installed, but go to the Microsoft Windows section and look for the updates with KB3035583. It should just be ‘Update for Microsoft Windows’ with the KB in parenthesis ().
4.) Click on that update to highlight it and then click on the Uninstall button near the top to the right of the Organize button. It will quickly uninstall the update and ask you to restart/reboot your computer. Do so.
5.) Once your computer is back up, go to Windows Update (via the Start button or Control Panel). Click on the ‘Check for Updates’ link on the left.
6.) After it’s finished checking, the same KB3035583 update will be back in the list in either the Optional or Important/Recommended updates section. Find it, make sure it’s unchecked, and then right-click on it and select Hide Update. This will hide the update so it not longer shows or installs automatically.
7.) Important!–Sometimes those who have already reserved Windows 10 and have it downloaded but not yet installed will get an additional option in the Windows Update list. It will be listed as ‘Windows 10 Home’ or ‘Windows 10 Pro’ depending on your current edition of Windows. Make sure to also uncheck and hide that update.
8.) Important 2!— Sometimes, you will have to do steps 5-7 multiple times as Microsoft has created slightly different versions of the updates, so that if you hide it, it comes back with the same name, but a slightly different file size (or something). Very annoying, but as long as you do it a few times and make sure they don’t show up any more, you are good.
That’s it, you are good to go! Microsoft will no longer force you to download Windows 10 nor the annoying upgrade notification. However, if you ever DO want to upgrade, you can always go back to Windows Update, click on the ‘Restore hidden updates’ link on the left, and restore the Windows 10 upgrade/update and check it so it downloads and installs again.
Don’t force things onto your users! That should be one of the rules of all companies, but it doesn’t always work like that. I hope Microsoft will learn a lesson from this mistake, but you know the answer to that already (No, they won’t).
